This Friday and Saturday, the first Siren Mountain Jam will be taking place at the High Country Fairgrounds near Boone, North Carolina. The brainchild of Beth Carroll and Kirsten Tiedermann, Siren Mountain Jam is a celebration of women. Complete with a line up of fantastic female artists – Joan Osborne, MeShell Ndegeocellow, and Toshi Reagon are slated to perform – and a diverse array of female artisans, healers, and dancers, women and their contribution to the arts will be in central focus.I recently caught up with organizer Beth Carroll to chat about the inspiration behind the festival, the line up, and all that Siren Mountain Jam had to offer festival attendees.BRO – This is the inaugural Siren Mountain Jam. What was the inspiration behind this festival?Beth – Kirsten and I go to a lot of festivals and enjoy lots of different types of music. We have wondered for a while why there aren’t more women on the stage when there are, generally, so many in the crowd. We also know so many great female musicians and women-fronted bands and had been to some older women’s festivals in the Southeast that don’t happen any longer. While we sort of hoped someone else would throw a festival like this, we kept talking about it and we just decided to do it ourselves. There are so many great female musicians that just don’t get the recognition they deserve.BRO – Do you see a void in women-oriented festivals?Beth – Well, there are some women-oriented festivals, but none that have happened in the Southeast for a while that are larger than a small local gathering, and none that have intended to be highly inclusive. We aim to welcome everyone that is a fan of these genres of music. There are a lot of music and art festivals that highlight really great music that seem much more male oriented and there are women’s festivals that happen far away, so we wanted to change that by having something here that would draw a crowd and be friendly to all.BRO – You guys have a great line up for a festival coming right out of the gate. Any of those artists that you are particularly excited to see?Joan OsborneBeth – Joan Osborne has been one of my favorites. We caught her with Phil Leash and The Dead. She’s really terrific. But everyone playing is terrific. That was kind of our criteria. Good and women oriented. We wanted people that we wanted to hear. So, ALL of them. Every single one of them. I am just hoping to not have to work in every other area of the festival so I can hear the music!!BRO – The festival is not just about women and music. What else is going to be going on?Beth – We have a really amazing and eclectic group of female artists that will be represented there. They create a variety of beautiful handmade items and most of them are from the local area. We tried to have a diverse representation of the different types of art. There will also be a healing arts village. There will be healing arts workshops running all day on things like yoga and acupuncture. We will also be doing a variety of different types of dancing. We’ll have belly dancers, fire spinners, and a group doing different types of dances from around the world. The goal was to feature a range of different types of art and not just music.BRO – Come Monday or Tuesday or one day next week, when you are able to decompress and think back over the weekend, how do think you will know that you were able to accomplish what you wanted to accomplish with the festival?Beth – I feel like it is already a success. I have met such amazing people and we have put together an event that a lot of folks are excited about. Assuming we pull it off, and everyone has a great time, it will be a success, and we aim to do it again. If we get to the end of the festival and next week and we start talking about next year, I think that is a sign that we have succeeded.Blue Ridge Outdoors and the folks at Siren Mountain Jam would love to give you the chance to go check out the festival this weekend on us. Take a shot at the trivia question below and email your answer to [email protected] A lucky winner of two passes to the festival will be picked from all of the correct answers received by 12:00 tomorrow – Thursday, June 20th. Press Association REMI GARDE Former Lyon manager Remi Garde has emerged as the early favourite with the bookmakers and held talks with Newcastle last season before the appointment of Steve McClaren. Garde, who played with Arsenal so knows the Premier League, left Lyon in 2014 to take a break from the game for personal reasons. Although his time with Arsenal was back in 1998 he has a proven managerial record having won the Coupe de France in 2012 during three seasons in charge at the Stade de Gerland. DAVID MOYES The former Everton and Manchester United manager is under pressure in Spain as Real Sociedad struggle in the Primera Division. With the team just above the relegation zone, Moyes’ days in Spain could be numbered although he did celebrate a 4-0 victory at Levante on Sunday. The Scotsman has already been linked with the job and has Premier League experience following his time at Goodison Park and Old Trafford. Sherwood left Villa Park following Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat by Swansea, a sixth straight defeat which left the club bottom of the Barclays Premier League table after Sunderland’s derby win on Sunday. Here Press Association Sport looks at the contenders to take over. Aston Villa are looking for a new manager following the decision to part company with Tim Sherwood. BRENDAN RODGERS The former Liverpool manager took the Anfield club to the verge of Premier League trophy success two seasons ago, only to fail to haul in Manchester City in the title run-in. Having forged his reputation at Watford, Reading and Swansea he got the job of Liverpool manager in succession to Kenny Dalglish. Following a 1-1 draw with Everton, Rodgers was sacked. He would see the Villa job as an ideal way to get back into management. NIGEL PEARSON Having established Leicester in the Premier League Pearson can take some credit for the side which has made a fine start to the season under Claudio Ranieri. He signed Jamie Vardy from Fleetwood and the striker has gone on to make his England debut this year. Off-field controversies dogged Pearson during his final days at Leicester and that could count against him in the eyes of Villa owner Randy Lerner. BOB BRADLEY The former United States head coach is currently in charge of Norwegian club Stabaek who lie second in the Tippeligaen standings to Rosenborg. Having made his name in Major League Soccer with Chicago Fire, New Jersey MetroStars and Chivas USA he was appointed USA coach in 2007, guiding them to the 2010 World Cup Finals in South Africa where they topped a group including England before a second round exit to Ghana. He left the USA job in 2011 and was quickly appointed to manage the Egyptian national side, but after failing to qualify for the 2014 World Cup his contract was not extended. SEAN DYCHE Burnley’s manager has Premier League experience from the Clarets’ single campaign in the top flight last season. As one of the most upwardly mobile young English managers he has forged a reputation which sees his name come into the frame for Premier League management vacancies. With Burnley currently third in the Sky Bet Championship table he might think twice about exchanging a promotion challenge for a relegation battle. GARY ROWETT The Birmingham manager has seen his reputation grow after a year in charge which has seen the club transformed from relegation candidates to genuine promotion challengers. Managers have crossed the city divide before with Alex McLeish being the most recent. The main thing that counts against the former Burton boss is his lack of Premier League experience. read more

Facebook37Tweet0Pin1 Submitted by Furniture WorksAn old and tired piece gets new life with a coat of paint. If you think of painted furniture as a scraped-up old chair you pick up at the flea market to put in the laundry room, think again. Painting used furniture has many benefits. It is great if you want to update your home on a budget, while keeping it stylish and is the most eco-friendly way to do so. It also allows you to get creative and add your own personality to your home. Consider it a work of art. Did you ever think of painted furniture as art? You don’t need to be especially artistically gifted to successfully create a conversation starter as well as a true work of art. Before you get started, take a mental survey of what it is that you want. What piece of furniture do I want? Where is it going and what will it be used for?Identify your style – What look are you going for? If you don’t have an idea of the look you’re trying to achieve, then look on the internet for inspiration. Pinterest is an awesome site for ideas of all kind and will show you different styles of old furniture and what they look like painted.Begin your furniture hunt – Start your search on Craigslist. Many people do not see the need for their grandmother’s 1940’s highboy dresser and are selling it for next to nothing. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Flea markets are also a good source but the prices can run a bit high. Here at Furniture Works, we have a large selection of affordable used wood pieces, such as dressers, nightstands, and hutches. All of which can be repainted to look like a one of a kind designer piece.Bar stools become a focal point with a creative paint job.Choose the colors and design – Choose a base color; buy some acrylic paint in a can and a good brush. Get a set of small bottles of acrylic paint in several colors at a crafts store and an inexpensive set of little brushes. Paint your furniture item. Acrylic dries quickly, so you’re ready to move on in half an hour.Use any colors you fancy. Bright, primary colors are favorites with kids. For your teen daughter, various pastel shades may be just the ticket. If you’ve chosen a dark green as your base color, a burnt orange can provide a nice contrast. When you’re doing this type of painted furniture project, you can ad lib, painting an appealing shape wherever it pleases you. Maybe you’ll then outline that shape in a contrasting color. Painted furniture can be a kind of pop-art creation. Perhaps you want to paint a vine that drapes gracefully across the chair seat or runs across the table like a runner. How about stripes on the rungs of the chair? Anything goes. A geometric pattern can look very attractive. If you are not so good with painting freehand, then create or download an attractive stencil. You can also find painted rollers with patterns on them at hardware stores.Don’t be afraid of pattern and bold color. Paint can always be redone.Tips and tricks – There are some other tricks of the painted furniture trade you’ll want to explore while creating your work of art. Acrylic paints can be diluted with water and layered over another color, a bit like batik. A swath of light blue crossing over a purple area creates a new shade and added dimension. There are clear acrylic gels which you can use to dilute the color while retaining the same body of the full strength paint. You can also create a cottage chic look by sanding the corners and edges lightly after the paint has dried. Experiment and have fun.The final product – When you’ve completed this first project, consider the possibilities. Remember that practice makes perfect so plan ahead and practice your designs and experiment with colors on a piece of paper beforehand. This will ensure that you are satisfied with the piece and will encourage you to keep going. Don’t get discouraged if it doesn’t look like the pictures. Your piece is unique and it is a one of a kind created by you.A painted furniture project is one you can put away and pick right back up when it’s convenient to your schedule. I can almost guarantee you’ll be eager to come back and work some more, because it’s a therapeutic and satisfying activity. Be forewarned that painted furniture projects can be addicting, just for the pleasure of creating a little work of art. read more
