Bruising Gym, in Stony Hill, one of Jamaica’s most successful boxing gyms, celebrates its seventh anniversary on Saturday night, with an eight-bout amateur boxing card, at the Stony Hill Primary and Junior High School, that will see boxers from that gym going up against those from other gyms in Jamaica. “Our boxers will be matching their skills against those from several other gyms in Jamaica, to see how we match-up, and fans should see a very exciting and competitive night of boxing” the gym’s Founder and head coach, Carl Grant told The Gleaner yesterday. Grant, who is former Jamaica amateur boxing representative, had a brief professional career, in which he won five fights and lost two. He then turned his attention to training young boxers, and decided to set up his own gym in 2008. The gym, which is located at the Community Centre in Stony Hill, started with nine boxers and now has 23 enrolled. It has turned out two boxers who moved to the professional ranks and have done well in the Wray and Nephew Contender series. They are, Sakima Mullings who won the welterweight title in 2014 and middleweight Richard Holmes, who was the runner up this year to Kemahl Russell. Two of their most outstanding amateurs are welterweight Kestna Davis and middleweight Michael Gardener, both of whom have represented Jamaica.
