FORT ST. JOHN, B.C. -With warmer weather temperatures many people are out enjoying lakes in northern B.C. it is important to stay healthy around algae blooms while enjoying the water.Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) blooms may appear in lakes across northern B.C. Blue-green algae are naturally occurring and can look like scum, grass clippings, fuzz or globs on the surface of the water. Blue-green algae can be blue-green, greenish-brown, brown, or pinkish-red, and often smells musty or grassy, shares Northern Health.People who come in contact with visible blue-green algae, or who ingest water containing toxins from blue-green algae, may experience skin irritation, rash, sore throat, sore red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea and vomiting or diarrhea. According to Northern Health symptoms usually, appear within one to three hours and resolve in one to two days. Symptoms in children are often more pronounced. Those making day-use of lakes are advised to take the following precautions:Avoid all contact with blue-green algae blooms. If contact occurs, wash with tap water as soon as possible.Do not swim or wade (or allow your pets to swim or wade) in any areas where blue-green algae are visible. As a reminder, Northern Health recommends that visitors and residents do not drink or cook with untreated water directly from any lake at any time. Boiling lake water will not remove the toxins produced by blue-green algae. An alternate source of drinking water should also be provided for pets and livestock. Pet owners should be wary of allowing pets to walk off-leash where they may be able to drink lake water – illnesses are a common outcome.Northern Health is reminding people that weather and wind conditions can cause algae blooms to move from one location in the lake to another. Given the shifting nature of algae blooms it is safest to apply the most rigorous precautions around blooms, or areas of the waterbody historically affected by blooms. If you suspect a problem related to blue-green algae you are welcome to connect with the Ministry of Environment at EnvironmentalComplaints@gov.bc.ca.If you require further information on health concerns, call Environmental Health at 250-565-2150.For more information; CLICK HERE
Rabat – The Ministry of Education has announced that schools will start at 9 a.m. and end at 6 p.m. with a lunch break between 1 and 2 p.m. The ministry has set the new time-table for all public and private schools, vocational training institutes, and universities, the ministry said in a statement Saturday. The new time will be effective beginning Wednesday, November 7. The date marks the end of the first school holiday. The aim of the decision is “to adapt studying time to the new standard time.” The government decided yesterday not to set the clocks back on Sunday, but to maintain Daylight Saving Time (GMT+1) year-round.According to the ministry’s statement, the aim of the time change is “to ensure best conditions for students, including proper academic learning, taking into account the needs of families.”The schedule change will give students only one hour for lunch. Traditionally, students had a two-hour lunch break from noon to 2 p.m. Many students who live far from their schools may no longer have enough time to go home for lunch. Some students in Morocco take public buses to get back home for lunch, which they may no longer have the time for..The new time-table, according to the ministry, will also enable all students to get to and from school or university safely by ensuring they leave school in the evening before dark. The time-table change comes after the government council adopted Draft Decree 2.18.855 Friday, to stay on Daylight Saving Time (DST) year-round, changing Morocco’s standard time from GMT to GMT+1.Public schools usually open at 8 a.m., which would have been just 5-30 minutes after sunrise on November 7, if Morocco returned to GMT.The minister delegate in charge of the reform of administration and public service, Mohamed Benabdelkader, said on Friday that the government would take into consideration school time and administration time so that parents can accompany their children before going to work “without pressure.”According to Benabdelkader, the government’s decision to maintain DST year-round was based on “an evaluation study and many indicators.”He continued, “The indicators include health aspects related to time change, energy saving and Morocco’s commercial transactions.” read more
In a statement issued by his spokesman, Mr. Annan described the attack as “the latest in a series of grave ceasefire violations that have resulted in a large number of civilian casualties, the displacement of thousands of people, and severe access restrictions for relief workers.”Monitors from the African Union (AU) reported that the Sudanese air force bombed the village of Rahad Kabolong, near the town of Shangil Tobaya in North Darfur state, on Wednesday. UN humanitarian agencies have declared the location around Rahad Kabolong to be a “no-go” area for their staff until further notice.Mr. Annan urged both the Government in Khartoum and the rebel movements in Darfur, which took up arms against the Sudanese Government in early 2003, to comply fully with their commitments under the ceasefire agreement they struck last year.Tens of thousands of people have been killed and more than 1.8 million others forced from their homes because of the conflict in Darfur, an impoverished and isolated region the size of France on Sudan’s western flank.Meanwhile, Jan Pronk, Mr. Annan’s Special Representative for Sudan, has wrapped up a brief visit to Darfur, where he met AU officials, local community representatives, aid workers and internally displaced persons (IDPs). read more
Between 2016 and 2018, large numbers of people were displaced from their homes due to militia-led violence and insecurity in the Kasais, fueling rights abuses and high levels of malnutrition among children. While pockets of insecurity still remain, thousands who had fled, have now returned to their communities: “We have been working tirelessly with partners and local communities in the Kasai region to support the slow recovery process following years of conflict and violence that have devastated children and families,” said Gianfranco Rotigliano, UNICEF Representative in the DRC.At the same time, at least 300,000 Congolese are returning from Angola, causing additional stress on health centers, schools and other basic services in Kasai and compromising access to essential and lifesaving services for many children.“We are concerned that recent gains for children might be lost in this fragile situation, now that we have many people returning to the region from Angola”, the UNICEF Representative pointed out.Over the last two years, UNICEF and its partners have treated 200,000 severely malnourished children in the Kasai region and rehabilitated 500 burned-down or looted classrooms so children could return to school. It has also assisted more than 100,000 children with psychosocial support and education material and supported more than 5,000 unaccompanied children and those associated with militias, helping to reintegrate them back into their families and communities. Moreover, since 2017, UNICEF and its partners in Kasai have vaccinated nearly four million children against measles and yellow fever; organized access to health care for more than 163,000 people; provided 900,000 people with water, sanitation and hygiene kits in cholera-prone zones; secured access to community spaces for learning for 78,000 children; provided essential household items to nearly 150,000 people; and reached more than six million people with key life-saving messages. read more

Yvonne Jackson of Washington, D.C. remembered holding her younger brother’s hand in 2012 as he lay dying in a hospital bed in Los Angeles.Yvonne Jackson takes part in Saturday’s Walk to End HIV in honor of her younger brother, Terrence Keith Richard. Her brother, Terrence Keith Richard, 37, was dying of complications from AIDS. He had contracted HIV 12 years earlier after having unprotected sex with another man, she said. She comforted her brother in his final moments by singing “Jesus loves me,” a song familiar to them both from childhood.“And he took his last breath,” Jackson, 44, said.Jackson walked in remembrance of her baby brother Oct. 25 during the Walk to End HIV, formerly known as the AIDS Walk Washington. The event was held at Freedom Plaza in the District and attracted more than 5,000 walkers and runners who raised roughly $600,000 for Whitman Walker-Health, a community health center in Northwest, along with 12 community partners said Dave Mallory, the walk’s director.Yvonne Jackson, who walked in honor of her younger brother, Terrence Keith Richard, joins nearly 5,000 people in the District for the Walk to End HIV.Not only did Whitman Walker-Health organize the walk, but it also serves people facing obstacles to quality care, according to its website. It has been part of the community since 1973 and specializes in LGBT and HIV care. The AIDS walk has been a District fixture for 28 years and is D.C.’s biggest fundraiser and community event focused on HIV and AIDS, Mallory said. The walk included a 3-mile walk, a timed 5K run, and debuted its new name this year. The name switch was due to the overall decline in the number of new AIDS cases in the District, Mallory said. Figures from the District’s health department also show HIV deaths are down from 345 in 2008, to 221 in 2012.“We’re in a more hopeful place,” Mallory said. But there’s still more work to be done, he added.According to a 2014 report from the health department, HIV and AIDS disproportionately affects the District when compared to the rest of the United States. The report, using 2012 data, found there were 16,072 District residents living with HIV, a number that exceeds the World Health Organization definition of 1 percent as a severe epidemic.Blacks are disproportionately affected with 3.9 percent living with HIV, the report said. Black men bear the largest burden in the District with 5.4 percent of the population infected. Conversely, HIV affects 1.5 percent of Latino and 1.1 percent of White residents in the District.Among Blacks, heterosexual contact was the predominate mode for transmission, accounting for 33.7 percent of living HIV cases. When it comes to women in the District, Black women make up the super majority of living HIV cases at 92.2 percent, according to another report from the District’s health department. In the two years since her brother died, Jackson says she has volunteered at various groups that support people living with HIV and AIDS.“I just prayed,” she said. “Prayed for a really good day and said a prayer for my brother and just wanted to let him know this was all for him.” read more

The content is provided for information purposes only. Moreover, Zhang adds, “Our work demonstrates that QPCM can reveal more surface information than STM. Therefore the QPCM technique can be useful in the experimental research of surface characterization.”There’s also room for improvement. “One advantage of QPCM technique is that STM and QPCM imaging can be easily combined,” notes Zhang. “In the future, it will be very nice to use a computer program to guide the scanning path of the contact during QPCM imaging, thereby avoiding areas on the surface in the STM image that can potentially destroy the atomic configuration of the contact. This measure is expected to increase the chance of success in performing QPCM imaging.” The future also holds the possibility of QPCM have an impact on a range of devices and applications. “QPCM technique might advance the development of nanoelectronics or other relevant application,” Zhang notes. “A good understanding and control of electronic transport in nanoscale objects will help the design and development of nanoscale devices such as molecular transistors and sensors, or nanowires that interconnect nanoelectronic components. Our work demonstrates the QPCM technique can probe the influence of local atomic stacking and chemical composition on the transport conductance, thereby improve our understanding of quantum transport.” In terms of next steps in their research, Zhang concludes, “After studying surface reconstruction and surface alloy with QPCM, the next step will be the QPCM study of electronic states on the surface. Besides the capability of probing the surface atomic stacking and chemical composition, the QPCM technique is also expected to reveal the influence of local electronic density of states on the transport current through the atomic contact.” Experiments Prove Existence of Atomic Chain Anchors (PhysOrg.com) — Since the first optical microscopes appeared in the late 1600s – an exact date and original inventor elude precise identification – microscopy has evolved dramatically. Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and (although not generally recognized as an established method) point contact microscopy (PCM) allow scientists to view objects inaccessible to optical microscopes, with images of atoms now commonplace. Nevertheless, even this inexorable march towards ever-smaller scales has encountered limitations. (For example, STM does not provide information on local chemistry, while PCM cannot adequately image individual atoms due to it not having a single-atom contact.) (E) Constant current image of a step edge on Cu(111). Standing wave patterns originating from the surface state are clearly visible in the image. (F) QPCM image of the same area as shown in (E). The conductance decrease from top to bottom of the image is due to the plane in which the tip scans being slightly tilted with respect to the surface. Moreover, QPCM can also be used to study quantum transport, and by using molecules as the contact to potentially identify specific chemical characteristics of the scanned surface. The research team – Yong-hui Zhang, working with Peter Wahl and Professor Klaus Kern – based their QPCM technique on low-temperature STM, and in fact QPCM operates in a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope at ~6 K (-267 °C) in an ultra-high vacuum. However, while STM is usually operated at conductance far below a conductance quantum – a quantized unit of conductance, represented by G0 – QPCM is operated at conductances up to a few conductance quanta. “The main challenge in designing and implementing the QPCM technique,” says Zhang, “is to maintain a stable atomic configuration at the single atomic point contact during imaging, since there is large stress inside the point contact and thus the atomic configuration is often very vulnerable to any small mechanical perturbation” Since the stress in a tunneling junction is far less than in the point contact, instability at the tip apex for STM imaging is of less concern than it is for QPCM.The team also leveraged previous research in the field. “Formation of a single atomic point contact on noble metal surfaces has been intensively studied by STM in Prof. Richard Berndt’s group at the University of Kiel in Germany during the last several years,” notes Zhang. Berndt’s team showed that conductance over single silver and copper adatoms (atoms adsorbed on a surface) exhibits a smooth and reproducible transition from tunneling to contact regime, demonstrating that a stable contact can be formed as the contact tip vertically approaching a single metal adatom on noble metal surfaces. “In our work,” Zhang adds, “QPCM imaging is performed after establishing a stable contact by scanning the contact in a plane parallel to the surface in constant-height scan mode and recording the current. We found the structure of the tip apex influences strongly both the stability of the atomic contact and the image quality of QPCM, where improvements are made by training the tip apex through, for example repeated tip indentation into the metal substrate.” Zhang also points out that the technique of QPCM imaging is itself not entirely new: Manipulated atomic imaging was first reported by J.A. Stroscio at NIST in 2004 and by Berndt’s group in 2010, where both demonstrated an adatom being laterally manipulated by the STM tip while imaging in constant-current mode. ”The manipulated atom imaging could be considered the same as the QPCM imaging,” Zhang points out, “despite the fact that they operate at different scanning mode and the former is used to operate at lower conductance. The novelty of our work lies in the QPCM study of a gold (Au(111)) surface reconstruction and an iron-platinum surface alloy (FePt), where the local atomic stacking and chemical composition are found to influence the transport current through the atomic contact.” What’s key about Zhang et al’s research is that interpreting the QPCM image is facilitated by operating in constant-height mode, and therefore feedback control of the scanning tip is not a concern. Image courtesy of C. Bouziane et al. July 20, 2010 – New dual source CT technology allows a radiation dose of as low as one millisievert (mSv) for computed tomography angiography (CTA) scans, Siemens announced last week at the 2010 Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography (SCCT) in Las Vegas. At SCCT, Somatom Definition Flash CT scanner users also showed how they use the system to display the coronary vessels, as well as the aorta, within one scan. Recently, cardiologists have been using the Somatom Definition Flash to plan the procedure for one of the newest therapy methods for valvular heart disease: transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Prior to this minimally invasive intervention, physicians had to examine the heart’s anatomy closely. This demand is also supported by the cardiovascular CT applications of the imaging software syngo.via. With automated processes, these applications can spare the cardiologists many manual steps that before were necessary – for instance, to measure the vessels.“Somatom Definition Flash enables us to significantly reduce CTA radiation dose in clinical routine into the sub-mSv range for the vast majority of patients,” said Jörg Hausleiter, M.D., cardiologist and director of the intensive care unit at the German Heart Center in Munich, Germany. Hausleiter and his colleagues have examined 60 to 70 percent of their patients with a radiation dose below one mSv. The Siemens scanner enables them to display the entire heart volume within only one heartbeat – independent of the patient’s heart rate. This is an improvement in CTA of the coronary vessels, where, until now, conventional technology has required considerably higher dose rates, and examinations in the sub-mSv range were only possible in very few patients. Dual Source CT allows scanning of every patient with high or irregular heart rates even without the use of beta blockers to slow down the heart rate. This means that even patients who cannot tolerate beta blockers may be spared referral to invasive angiography.Somatom Definition Flash’s low-dose scanning potential also benefits patients with heart valve disease who were selected for a TAVI and must be examined by CT in order to plan the procedure. The minimally invasive TAVI treatment is particularly appropriate for older patients with a high perioperative risk during heart surgery. It links the implantation of an artificial heart valve with a balloon dilatation in the catheter laboratory. The great advantage is that the patient’s thorax must not be opened as the new valve is inserted through the femoral artery or through a small incision between the ribs. For the preparation of this procedure, Somatom Definition Flash brings even more benefits to the user. TAVI patients are usually multimorbid and suffer from renal insufficiency. They can barely metabolize larger quantities of contrast agent that often have to be applied for a CTA to display the coronary arteries and the aorta. “For us, Somatom Definition Flash is the best solution to plan a TAVI because it allows us to reduce contrast agent significantly,” said Tobias Pflederer, M.D., cardiologist at University Hospital Erlangen, Germany. “Single-source CTs, for example, require 100 or even 150 milliliters of contrast agent for assessing the abdominal aorta. With the Definition Flash, we need only 40 milliliters for the aorta and the coronary arteries.” Prior to the TAVI treatment, the cardiologists need to clarify many anatomical issues regarding the vessels. They must know, for example, whether there are stenoses in the peripheral arteries. In that case, they could not insert the new valve through the femoral artery. Furthermore, they must determine the diameter of the aortic bulbus (initial part of the aorta) to select the right size of the artificial valve. syngo.via combines the application modules syngo.CT Vascular Analysis and syngo.CT Cardiac Function to display a dedicated TAVI planning workflow that helps physicians answer all these questions quickly and easily. The software, for instance, automatically exposes the aorta and its valves virtually. It reconstructs the vessel in the most important planes and automatically indicates the measurements that the physician has to conduct for his diagnosis. CAÑAS, Guanacaste – The widening to four lanes of the Inter-American Highway North, from Cañas to Liberia, is moving forward at full pace.A recent visit by The Tico Times to the construction site confirmed that the project already has changed the lives of hundreds of local residents who use the highway daily. But not all the changes are good, some locals say.Officials from the Public Works and Transport Ministry, or MOPT, say that communities along the Inter-American Highway will benefit from the highway’s expansion because travel times will be faster and the road will be safer for drivers and pedestrians. Plus, it will create new jobs, they say.The project started in May 2012, and although MOPT and the private construction consortium FCC have not stated when it will be finished, the contract sets a final date of May 31, 2015.According to MOPT project managers Carlos Villalta, Enrique Obed and Kenneth Solano, contracts for 18 new or renovated bridges have different completion dates leading up to the May 2015 deadline. Three intersections also will be modified – in Cañas, Bagaces and Liberia – by Spanish construction firm Puentes y Calzadas SLU. The deadline for the new intersections is November 2015.MOPT officials said in an email reply to The Tico Times that the project is important for Costa Rica and specifically for the northwestern region because it forms part of the Pacific Corridor of the International Mesoamerican Highways Network. They said it would help foster “development and productive links to Guanacaste.” A glimpse of things to come. Fabiola Pomareda/The Tico TimesMore tourismThe officials also said the highway’s expansion would “strengthen links to other tourism regions in the country, and create sources of employment during and after construction.”But there is much speculation as to the specific benefits for adjacent communities, and not much has been put down on paper.Villalta, Obed and Solano highlighted only the project’s goal of providing better roadway conditions and a safer and faster route. They said the project would “promote new job sources by creating a better business environment.”It has created temporary jobs: Currently 350 new hires are working on the roadway, while 230 workers are building bridges and 200 others are slated to renovate the three intersections.According to MOPT, once finished, the expanded highway will reduce travel times by at least an hour. Transport officials say the project will help link the area to other tourism regions in the country. Fabiola Pomareda/The Tico TimesLocals aren’t entirely convincedEsmeralda Arévalo, a master’s student in wildlife conservation at the National University, chose the project for her dissertation. During her research, she spoke directly with residents from nearby communities who will be affected by the project, interviewing 81 people who live along the route, specifically between El Salto River and Cañas River. The interviews took place from June to December 2013.Arévalo spoke with residents of San Cristóbal, Cañas, El Pretal, Corobicí, Hacienda La Pacífica, Montenegro, La Guaria, Villa Vieja, Bagaces, Pijije and El Salto, communities with diverse businesses and people. Arévalo told The Tico Times that she asked locals if they thought the project would have a positive or negative influence on their lives, and if they favored or opposed it.Many said they viewed the project as positive and “necessary” for the development of their communities. Others said construction already has hurt their small businesses, which include sodas (small restaurants), auto service centers, fruit shops and pulperías (corner stores).Of those interviewed, 33 saw the project as a positive development, while 42 said it was a negative one. Six people said they did not have enough information to decide.Positive responses included statements such as: “It’s a good thing”; “it incorporates safety measures” (such as better signage, more speed control, pedestrian bridges and sidewalks); it is “fundamental for the community’s development”; “it improves transit”; “it was desperately needed”; “it will facilitate a greater number of vehicles”; and it’s “bonita” (pretty).Negative opinions included: It’s “a bad thing because now [pedestrians] won’t be able to cross” (the project does include pedestrian bridges and sidewalks); “it’s incredibly ugly”; “it’s problematic” and “dangerous”; or “very dangerous”; it’s “an inconvenience” and a “waste of money”; and it’s a “massive headache.”Others said the project has generated “uncertainty.”Asked if the highway expansion would bring benefits to the communities, 26 people said yes, while 49 said no. Six did not respond.Among the benefits mentioned were more businesses, a better business environment, new jobs in the region and more tourism. Some mentioned the new pedestrian bridges, ease of transit and increased property values.Negative comments included “it won’t bring anything positive,” there are “no benefits,” it’s “very noisy,” and it is “unnecessary.” Some said it would hurt businesses, not help. Others said it is “dangerous for children,” and has brought “additional costs and problems.”“In Cañas, for example, one gentleman who changes tires said that cars no longer can access his business. Others said that the new elevated highway means drivers won’t be able to see their businesses, there won’t be enough parking and income is going to decrease,” Arévalo said. “In San Cristóbal, school administrators said the highway is dangerous for children.”Some claimed that the removal of trees in the area was unnecessary, that the project has caused significant environmental damage and that many animals have been killed on the highway due to loss or disruption of habitat. They also complained about a lack of information regarding the project and an abundance of dust. Some businesses stand to gain with a new highway, officials say, while others, like this soda, will have to go back to the drawing board. Fabiola Pomareda/The Tico TimesMayor: Better roads are a good thingBagaces Mayor Jorge Rojas told The Tico Times that Bagaces “has benefited significantly from the expansion.” He said it has generated jobs and businesses have benefited. For example, many temporary workers are housed in local cabinas, which they rent.“We know that this is an important project, not only for Costa Rica’s future, but also for an entire network of countries,” Rojas said. “It benefits us because we can move more quickly and have better routes.”Rojas said the project also has helped generate interest in investment. “We’ve seen people come here with an interest in setting up shop along the highway, because it’s going to cut travel time from the airport at [the provincial capital of] Liberia and from Caldera Port,” on the central Pacific coast. The Pacific Corridor – which includes the Inter-American Highway North – links Puebla, Mexico, to Panama City. Fabiola Pomareda/The Tico TimesImportant regional links“This corridor extends from Puebla, in Mexico, to Panama, and it favors the exchange of people and goods. It reduces travel time, which will help reduce operating costs and the final cost for consumers who buy the products,” the three MOPT officials said in a joint email. The International Network of Mesoamerican Highways, or RICAM, was established on June 28, 2002 in Mérida, Mexico. Several countries, including Costa Rica signed a memorandum of understanding that sought to modernize more than 13,000 kilometers of highways in the region.RICAM’s objective, according to its website, is to “open new possibilities for Mesoamerican integration and place exportable production within market reach via land routes that connect populations, productive zones and principal points of distribution.”The Pacific Corridor – which includes the Inter-American Highway North – is a regional corridor of integration that spans 3,244 kilometers of highways that cross six international borders and seven countries along the Pacific coast. Some 95 percent of traded goods in Mexico and Central America pass within this corridor.According to MOPT officials, “much of the transport cargo that currently uses other corridors will eventually use this improved corridor with the expectation of better travel times.”Villalta, Obed and Solano added that “by promoting faster access to the La Cruz region, expansion will allow regional links to La Cruz, Mirmania, Santa Cecilia, Muelle, National Route 4 and the new Atlantic corridor Bajos de Chilamate-Vuelta de Kopper.” Facebook Comments Related posts:Cañas-Liberia Highway expansion faces yet another delay Costa Rica’s popular Highway 27 to Pacific at risk from rains Pavones: Tiny surf capital up in arms about big condo project After Scottish independence referendum, could Guanacaste be next? read more

August 7, 2015 473 Views Fixed mortgage rates remained under the 4 percent threshold, moving down for the third week in a row.Freddie Mac recently released the results of its Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS), finding that average fixed mortgage rates continue to drop as economic uncertainty pushed Treasury yields lower.”All eyes are on the upcoming July employment report, as the Fed has made it clear developments in the labor market will affect the timing of any potential rate hike,” said Sean Becketti, chief economist, Freddie Mac. “But early signals indicate Friday’s employment report will not look so good.According to Freddie Mac, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage (FRM) averaged 3.91 percent with an average 0.6 point for the week ending August 6, 2015, a decrease from last week the rate averaged 3.98 percent. The 30-year FRM averaged 4.14 percent a year ago at this time. The 15-year FRM this week averaged 3.13 percent with an average 0.6 point, down from last week when it averaged 3.17 percent, according to Freddie Mac. A year ago at this time, the 15-year FRM averaged 3.27 percent.Freddie Mac also found that the 5-year Treasury-indexed hybrid adjustable-rate mortgage (ARM) averaged 2.95 percent this week with an average 0.4 point, unchanged from last week. A year ago, the 5-year ARM averaged 3.27 percent. In addition, the 1-year Treasury-indexed ARM averaged 2.54 percent this week with an average 0.3 point, up from last week when it averaged 2.52 percent. At this time last year, the 1-year ARM averaged 2.98 percent.”The employment cost index rose 0.2 percent in the second quarter, the lowest quarterly increase in its 33-year history and ADP’s Private Employment Report missed expectations for private jobs in July,” Becketti said. “Uncertainty about the economy helped drive down Treasury yields early in the week, and thus mortgage rates fell 7 basis points to 3.91 percent, the lowest level since June 4th.” Fixed Mortgage Rates Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Market Survey Treasury 2015-08-07 Staff Writer in Daily Dose, Data, Featured, Government, News Mortgage Rates Remain Under 4 Percent Threshold Share read more

will be a milestone in the Communist nation’s development Yechury the Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary said the upcoming congress is of great significance to both China and the world state-run Xinhua news agency quoted him as saying ahead of the 19th Congress scheduled to be held from 18 October in which President Xi Jinping is expected to get party’s endorsement for a second five-year term The decisions of the CPC National Congress will be a milestone in China’s future development and progress Yechury was quoted as saying CPC holds Congress once in five years to review its policies and selects new leaders File image of CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury PTI "As far as the world is concerned we think the Congress’ decisions will be important for strengthening multilateralism in international relations as opposed to unilateralism and imperialism" he said Yechury spoke highly of the CPC’s achievements under the leadership of Xi Jinping who is the general secretary of the CPC besides being the president and head of the military One major achievement of CPC was the successful adjustment to the global economic crisis that broke out in 2008 He said when global trade was falling it was not easy for a country that heavily relied on exports investment and consumption to shift its focus to developing domestic demands and economy "But China has done remarkably well under the circumstances which is a very big achievement" he added Yechury noted that there have been remarkably positive changes in terms of governance by empowering the people and fighting corruption in China In his opinion the concept of "Three Stricts and Three Earnests" has strengthened ties between the CPC and the people The "Three Stricts and Three Earnests" is an internal education campaign advanced by Xi Jinping in 2014 to urge officials to be strict in morals power and self-discipline and to be honest in decisions business and behaviour "I think in the future challenges such as economic development social harmony and the fight against negative features will be met more effectively in China" he said Port of Spain:Captain Virat Kohli will look to put to rest all the off-field controversies regarding Anil Kumble’s controversial exit as India gear up for the first ODI against a second string West Indies in Port of Spain on Friday Ironically it was the Caribbean Islands where Anil Kumble’s journey as the chief national coach started but within a year the team is back without its coach West Indies captain Jason Holder with his Indian counterpart Virat Kohli meet-up before the start of the series Image courtesy- Twitter@BCCI Skipper Kohli whose much publicised difference of opinion with coach Anil Kumble has grabbed the headlines more than team’s performance in the Champions Trophy couldn’t have asked for a more convenient opposition than the West Indies which even struggled against minnows Afghanistan A cluster of big wins in the five-match ODI series and single T20 will help Kohli divert the unnecessary attention pinned on him with many ready to make him the ‘fall guy’ in the entire Kumble episode This will also be an occasion when Kohli will have complete freedom in team selection as batting coach Sanjay Bangar is not known for giving any tangible inputs save giving throwdowns to the senior players of the side With Jason Holder’s men just about managing to draw the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan 1-1 there is no doubt that the current Indian team are a few notches ahead in terms of quality Even Kohli knows that well and with BCCI top brass backing him on the Kumble issue the margin for error is very little for the Indian captain A 5-0 whitewash is something that is expected against a side that has a cumulative ODI experience of 213 matches between 13 players with skipper Holder as the most-capped player with 58 matches to his name Compare it to a whopping 776 matches collectively between Yuvraj Singh (301) MS Dhoni (291) and Virat Kohli (184) the stark contrast between the two sides is so very distinct For India this series is also an ideal platform to test the team’s bench strength With Jasprit Bumrah being rested for the series it will be an ideal opportunity for the captain to check out Mohammed Shami who did not get a game during the Champions Trophy The pacer has not played any official ODI since the 2015 World Cup semi-final post which he had multiple surgeries and played a few Test matches only Shami will be keen to regain his place in the ODI XI and West Indies gives him a proper chance to do so With Rohit Sharma also cooling his heels for this series Kohli may be tempted to bring back Ajinkya Rahane at the top of the order Rahane has not been in great form in limited overs of late but as a reserve opener he might get a go The other option is to try out young Rishabh Pant who has had the experience of opening for Delhi in domestic cricket Pant is an explosive player and can make good use of the first Powerplay when only two fielders are outside the 30-yard circle Also with the Indian selectors planning to groom him as Dhoni’s successor one might see him being given adequate chances The other youngster in the squad chinaman Kuldeep Yadav may also fancy his chances after West Indies failed to read conventional leg-break bowler Rashid Khan Kuldeep may be tried in place of either Ravichandran Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja — both of whom have been ordinary during the ICC Champions Trophy By: PTI | Los Angeles | Updated: December 26 2015 12:01 previous ten matches reflect an impressive run of form for the Indian football team but the picture appears quite different if you happen to take a glance at the Fifa rankings With a rank of 152 in the world Indian football has faded away on the world map of the sport Indian football has been in transition for ages but with the launch of the Indian Super League and the upcoming U-17 Fifa World Cup set to be staged in the country it appears to be for real Is the sleeping giant of football about to wake up Puerto Rico – a team from the Caribbean that’s ranked 38 places above India in the Fifa rankings – will put that belief to a stern test on Saturday evening Indian football team practicing ahead of clash against Puerto Rico AIFF Twitter It is after four years that India is facing a non-Asian team but this fact has been overridden by the return of international football to the city of Mumbai after a 61 years The timing of this clash couldn’t have been better With the Asian Cup Qualifiers coming up next year India needs to find a way up in the Fifa ranking charts and the only way of doing that is by trouncing a team ranked higher than India For the Indian team’s head coach Stephan Constantine though it is bit more than that "I’d rather lose 0-4 to Iran that win 5-0 against Bhutan simply because my players learn a lot from the game against sides like Iran" the English manager said ahead of the Puerto Rico clash "They (Puerto Rico) have similarities with Guam Most of their players are based in the United States In fact they even have a team Puerto Rico FC which play in the US League They have a number of players playing in Europe and they will be a very good side make no mistake of that They recently lost to USA 3-1 It’s good to test ourselves against these kind of teams And hopefully we will be able to pass the test" said the Englishman Constantine has maintained that he has a long-term plan for the development of Indian football and has stuck with a core group of young players who according to himcan serve India really well over the next 6-7 years "We are trying to build a pool of players who would represent India for the next 6-7 years In fact we already have built a sizeable group but there will be additions Today there is a healthy competition for each of the slots and it’s a first time that I am having such a problem For me it’s a good problem to have" Constantine said India’s youthfulness could come very handy against a jaded Puerto Rico side who missed their flight to Mumbai and only landed in the host city at 5 PM IST on Friday Having reached India just 27 hours before the game that too after a long journeywould have already taken a toll on the visitors and it will be a task for Caribbean side who will be without three key men who are missing thanks to club commitments However Constantine refused to believe that it will have a huge bearing on the game "They are a good side with many good players Yeah one may mention about their landing timing in Mumbai but you cannot take away their quality Can you Puerto Rico were one of the best movers in the FIFA Rankings They are a very organised side" he said The Englishman also hinted at an ultra aggressive approach going into the match? and Lionel Messi scored for Barcelona from a free kick early in the second half.
