Efficiency Vermont’s 13th Better Buildings by Design conference highlights new trends in energy-efficient building

first_imgOn February 9-10, one thousand building design and construction professionals will gather in Burlington, VT, to learn about the latest technical innovations and energy-efficient practices at the region’s premier building conference ‘ Efficiency Vermont’s Better Buildings by Design 2011.This year’s conference will feature internationally recognized architect Bill Reed, a proponent and leading practitioner in the area of integrative and regenerative design. In his keynote address on February 9 at 8:30a.m., he will address the topic of ‘Integrative and Regenerative Design: Redefining the Practice of Sustainability.’Reed is a founding board member of the US Green Building Council and was a co-chair of the LEED Technical Committee.  He represents the cutting edge of building design with work that centers on creating and managing an integrative, whole-systems design process. He has consulted on more than two hundred projects around the world, including the Brattleboro Food Coop, which he helped transform into a LEED Gold grocery store ‘ and much more. His work helped reduce the Coop’s energy consumption by 30 percent; the design was also developed to include access to the agriculture and soil extension service, a cannery, a credit union, and a daycare center.Reed’s holistic approach is significant to the growing number of designers, architects and builders in Vermont dedicated to energy efficiency and sustainability. Some of those Vermonters will be honored for their exceptional work in design and construction. Winners of Efficiency Vermont’s 2011 ‘Best of the Best’ Awards in energy-efficient design and construction will be recognized during the conference’s Opening Session, preceding Reed’s keynote address.Joining Reed at the conference will be a number of renowned speakers, who will introduce the latest innovations in energy efficiency. Workshops will be presented in four simultaneous tracks: Building Envelope, Mechanical Systems, Lighting, and Innovations & High Performance. Just a few of the topics include:High Performance or Hype Performance? In this session, Marc Rosenbaum, PE, of South Mountain Company, will examine the models and performance of five recently completed projects: Deep energy retrofits of an elementary school wing and a masonry carriage house converted to offices; a new 11,000 square-foot dormitory with faculty apartments; eight new, affordable single-family homes designed to be zero net energy possible; and a zero net energy retrofit single family home. All but the last are buildings conditioned by mini-split heat pumps.LEDs: Wading Through the Hype to Get Great Results. Learn how to tell low-quality LEDs from ones that are ready for architectural applications now. In this presentation, Naomi Miller, FIES, FIALD, LC, of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will arm you with tools and metrics and a process to follow to help reduce the risks of using this new technologyENERGY STAR® Homes 3.0: Designing and Building to Meet 2011 Changes. Efficiency Vermont will work with Vermont builders to roll out new ENERGY STAR standards. Efficiency Vermont’s Li Ling Young will discuss where the residential market is headed and outline the new requirements for ENERGY STAR Homes 3.0 and how to achieve the standard in Vermont.Insulation Materials: From Fiberglass to Foam, Lamb’s Wool to Blue Jeans. Past Better Buildings by Design keynote speaker Fernando Pagés Ruiz will present the facts on today’s range of insulation systems and materials, their features, uses, pros, and cons. Pagés Ruiz will cover the traditional to the unconventional, and help you distinguish between legitimate approaches and marketing gimmicks.Downsizing Mechanical Systems after Retrofits. When successful building envelope retrofits substantially improve the thermal performance of a home, the existing HVAC equipment may become oversized to meet new, smaller heating/cooling needs. In this session, Skip Hayden of Integrated Energy Systems and CanmetENERGY will help participants find out when this situation creates a liability, when equipment downsizing, altering, or replacement is appropriate, and whether or not a shell retrofit can result in changes dramatic enough to warrant rethinking the space-conditioning systems.Approximately 1,000 building and construction professionals from throughout the Northeast are expected to attend the conference, a comprehensive, interactive learning experience about building durability, efficiency, and value. The exhibit hall trade show will feature more than 50 exhibitors displaying the latest residential and commercial building products and services. For more information, please visit www.efficiencyvermont.com/conference(link is external). Efficiency Vermont was created by the Vermont Legislature and the Vermont Public Service Board to help all Vermonters reduce energy costs, strengthen the economy, and protect Vermont’s environment. Crapo, moderate democrats announce deal on Dodd-Frank changes

first_img continue reading » A bipartisan group of senators, led by Banking Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Id.) Monday unveiled changes to Dodd-Frank that eschews a controversial overhaul of the CFPB in favor of other that credit union trade groups said would provide them with much-needed regulatory relief. The groups emphasized the importance of several provisions, including one that would provide that a 1- to 4-family dwelling that is not the primary residence of a member not be considered a member business loan under the Federal Credit Union Act.“We certainly think there are good things in the bill that will help credit unions,” said Carrie Hunt, NAFCU’s executive vice president of government affairs and general counsel. She added that taken together, changes in mortgage law particularly will help credit unions. 8SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblrlast_img read more

Letters to the Editor for Wednesday, Jan. 30

first_imgReserve education aid for our citizensIn response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushing this Dream Act through,  I would just like to say that I feel infuriated that my husband and I are taxpayers in the state of New York and our son received zero aid from this state when he attended college. We wanted our son to get a great education, which he did, and we paid for it out of our own pocket without help from anyone. Trump’s got nothing positive to brag aboutPresident Trump recently tweeted about all his accomplishments. I’d just like to add a few he left out.Trump has managed to lose 10 cabinet members and 65 of his executive staff and has helped the Republican Party lose 40 House seats. Grateful for highway crew work in GlenvilleJust a quick note from the Glenville area of the county of Schenectady. The town Highway Department and its staff have done an excellent job of snow removal and salting and sanding in these last couple of weeks of inclement weather. Let’s give them a big thanks.Robert NicolellaGlenville Now my husband, myself and my son can pay for the loans he needed to accomplish this for the next 10 years. Meanwhile, please let me pay for some immigrant in the country illegally, who has no business being in this state, so that he or she may receive some free education from our governor. If I were the governor, I would be sure to push the right to vote through for these same illegal immigrants so that there will be someone to vote for him in the future. I for one will be looking into packing my bags, and I will encourage my son to take his degree from Clarkson University and get the hell out of this state. Kathleen LamphereCanajoharie Categories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionDemocrats work hard for upstate NY, too According to Market Watch, he’s increased the U.S. trade deficit by billions, despite his campaign promise to “get rid” of it.  Not only has the economy not increased, but his economic policies since February 2018 have driven the Dow index down significantly. And, the national debt (what you and I owe other countries like China) is more than $2 billion higher since he’s been in office. But, on the positive side, he’s traveled for 44 campaign rallies and 67 visits to golf clubs, mostly ones he owns. Oh yeah, and he spent two minutes at the Martin Luther King, Jr. monument.Richard W. Lewis, Jr.Glenville How hard is that to understand? Just look north to the Mohawk Harbor property: not one slick sidewalk or blocked entrance anywhere at Rivers Casino and beyond on the ‘Harbor’ properties. Now, that’s snow removal.Gerald PlanteSchenectady Keep politics out of restaurant reviewsJust when I thought your anti-Trump rhetoric couldn’t get any worse, I read the dining review of El Charro Mexican Grill. The article twice took veiled digs at the president and his policies. Let’s keep the politics out of restaurant reviews. The Gazette already publishes enough negative things about our president. Edward PritchardSchenectady Electoral College failed America once againHey, have you got a minute? For the second time in as many decades, a constitutional appendix has foiled the will of the majority of the United States voters.Another election where the candidate who wins the popular vote doesn’t get the White House.Over the years, the Electoral College has been much derided, including by its most recent beneficiary: Donald Trump. The Electoral College is a disaster for a democracy. November 6, 2016. Think about it.Joe DruzbaSchenectadyMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesEDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationCuomo calls for clarity on administering vaccineFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen? I read The Daily Gazette’s Jan. 27 editorial advising the state Legislature to take their time considering bills, and I agree. But I disagree with the statement about halfway through the article that talks about how the Republican Party are really the ones who represent upstate, while Democrats care only about New York City. This is also a common refrain in the campaign materials of upstate Republicans. But it’s wrong. People who live here care about here. I’ve run in two local elections myself, and just a few months ago worked on a state Senate race. Not once did anyone in any party talk about subways, or Long Island traffic, or really much of any local issues past our homes. The big state and national issues like taxes and healthcare and schools are important to people, regardless of where they live. I know lots of great Democrats and lots of great Republicans in our community. They may have different ideas on how to handle issues, but we all care about the same things, and a Democrat will fight just as hard for their constituents as a Republican.Howard R. SchlossbergNiskayuna No parking charges until snow is removedLately, walking throughout downtown Schenectady is quite the icy-dicey trip. And what about all those meters you have to use to park? You can’t get to them climbing up a packed snowy incline. From Mayor Gary McCarthy down to the rip-off DSIC, which charges for such, we consumers ain’t gettin’ a bang for our tax buck. Until city employees and merchants, et. al., learn how to remove snow, don’t expect us shoppers to shop or pay for parking. You’re taking your life into your own hands. Remove the snow from entrances from the curb to the door. last_img read more

Trump says up to 100,000 Americans may die from coronavirus

first_imgUS President Donald Trump said on Sunday he now believes as many as 100,000 Americans could die in the coronavirus pandemic, after the death toll passed his earlier estimates, but said he was confident a vaccine would be developed by the year’s end.Trump alternated during a two-hour virtual town hall broadcast by FOX News between forecasting a rapid recovery for the US economy and casting blame for the pandemic’s spread on China, where the disease is believed to have originated. The COVID-19 illness, caused by the new coronavirus, has sickened more than 1.1 million in the United States and killed more than 67,000 Americans, shut wide swaths of society, including most schools and many businesses.  In an assessment that clashes with those of some public health experts, Trump said he believed that by the end of the year there would be a vaccine against COVID-19.”I think we’re going to have a vaccine by the end of the year. The doctors would say, well you shouldn’t say that,” Trump said. “I’ll say what I think … I think we’ll have a vaccine sooner than later.”Many health experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, have cautioned that a vaccine is likely a year to 18 months away. There is an “incredibly small” chance of having a highly effective vaccine or treatment for the coronavirus within the next year, England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said on April 22.Trump also said he wanted students to return to schools and colleges in the autumn, even as he acknowledged the possibility of a resurgence of the disease.”We’ll put out the embers, we’ll put out whatever it may be. We may have to put out a fire,” he said.Speaking the day before the Senate returns to Washington, Trump said it was possible that federal coronavirus aid could rise to $6 trillion from the nearly $3 trillion Congress has already passed to try to ease the heavy economic toll of the crisis.”There is more help coming. There has to be,” he said.Democrats have made clear they want to provide a sizable rescue package for state and local governments as part of a broader bill – one that could total over $2 trillion – while some Republicans criticized the idea as unreasonably expensive.”We will be doing infrastructure and I told Steve [Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin] just today we are not doing anything unless we get a payroll tax cut,” Trump said.Trump, who has been criticized for not moving faster early in the year to stop the spread of the disease, sought to blunt the criticism by blaming China.Trump said China had made a “horrible mistake” without saying precisely what this was or providing specific evidence for his assertion.Earlier in the day, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said there was “a significant amount of evidence” that COVID-19 emerged from a Chinese laboratory, but did not dispute US intelligence agencies’ conclusion that it was not man-made. “We’re going to lose anywhere from 75, 80 to 100,000 people. That’s a horrible thing,” said Trump, who as recently on Friday had said he hoped fewer than 100,000 Americans would die and earlier in the week had talked about 60,000 to 70,000 deaths.About half the states have now moved toward at least partial lifting of shutdowns as the number of new cases of the COVID-19 illness has begun to drop or level off and as citizens agitate for relief from restrictions that have sent the economy into a tailspin.”We can’t stay closed as a country [or] we’re not gonna have a country left,” Trump said.Trump has criticized FOX recently, casting the conservative-leaning network as insufficiently supportive. He faced few tough questions in the event, which gave him a new format to reach the public while he is unable to hold campaign rallies and after he faced widespread criticism for his combative daily briefings.center_img Topics :last_img read more

Estonian Government Halts 600MW Offshore Wind Project

first_imgThe Estonian government will not issue a building permit to the developer of a 600MW offshore wind farm in the Estonian Baltic Sea, citing national security concerns as the reason for the decision. The 600MW Saaremaa offshore wind farm is being developed by Saare Wind Energy OU.The company proposes to erect 100 turbines in the 6-megawatt class off the west coast of the Saaremaa Island. The project was initially valued at around EUR 1.7 billion, which has now been lowered to EUR 1.3 billion due to technological advancements and lower construction cost. The Estonian Wind Power Association has cited government spokespersons as saying that ”if the building permit is granted, the applicant may threaten public order, social security and national security.” According to local media reports, one of the main concerns is that funding for the project may come from ”Russia or any other hostile country.” The developers have dismissed this claim, saying that the financing offers came from the UK and Germany.Back in February, Estonia’s Minister of Justice Urmas Reinsalu announced the government’s decision to refuse to issue the building permit for the project ”because according to the Internal Security Service, the offshore farm may bring with it a risk for Estonia’s security.”The developer is expected to challenge the government’s decision in court.last_img read more

Some abuse just isn’t talked about

first_imgStuff co.nz 17 May 2014Their friends always thought they were a marvellous couple. But nobody knows what really goes on inside a marriage – and after they retired, things at home got really bad.>> SPECIAL REPORT: Elder abuseShe’d always had a quick temper, but as they both began to grow older, she became violent.“When you’re married you accept that sort of thing – up to a certain stage,” he says. “She’d be good as gold one day, and the next day – bang.“How can you understand that?”His face lost colour, and he developed depression. Several times, he thought about doing himself in – it would be easier than talking about it. He avoided his friends, and lost so much weight that they thought he had cancer. But he lied to his mates and he lied to his family. He lied to his GP about what was causing his bruises and scratches, saying he kept bumping into walls – even while he grew more withdrawn and frail. Better that, than to admit what was really going on, which is that his wife abused him with her words, her nails, and her fists, and had been doing so for years.http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/health/10055992/Some-abuse-just-isn-t-talked-aboutlast_img read more
