Grateful to companies that back smart growth

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion Clifton Park is fortunate to have a corporation like Price Chopper redevelop its shopping area at the intersection of Route 146 and Vischer Ferry Road instead of abandoning it and constructing a new Market 32 store on undeveloped land. This is very rare, because most businesses simply move out and leave an empty building to be demolished or repurposed by someone else.Further, Price Chopper is sharing the area with other businesses, i.e. a pharmacy, a barbershop, a restaurant and a bank. It’s noteworthy that some of these businesses are locally owned and are invested in the community. Many big, corporate stores headquartered elsewhere do not allow other businesses to share their space and rarely use smart-growth principles to rejuvenate old and tired retail areas.Another locally owned business, DCG builders, has dramatically transformed the Clifton Park Centre shopping center at Exit 9, making it a more pleasant area to shop. The company has also recently revamped its office buildings along Route 146. It is encouraging to see these companies employ smart-growth principles in our community, and I thank them.Frank BerlinClifton ParkThe writer is president of the Friends of Clifton Park Open Space.More from The Daily Gazette:Controversial solar project goes before Clifton Park Planning BoardEDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen?last_img read more

County officials not at Vets Day event

first_imgI ran for local office because I saw there was a need, and sadly there still is. I wasn’t elected, but I was at the ceremony. I had the opportunity to listen to a very passionate, from-the-heart speech by Town Supervisor Chris Koetzle. Legislators Fluman, Gatta and Socha won re-election despite the very real criticism that they are disconnected from their communities. They missed the speech on Veteran’s Day because they were AWOL.Later that night, I attended the annual Celebrating Our Heroes Veterans Miracle Center dinner event. The guest speaker was Pete Hegseth of Fox News and the event was well attended by local, state and national leaders. Niskayuna’s town supervisor-elect, Yasmin Syed, was also in attendance. Our town supervisors again show, when the election is over, how to lead and be active participants in our communities.Kurt SemonGlenvilleMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesEDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationEDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen? Categories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion Scotia-Glenville celebrated Veterans Day with great reverence, as it has done for many years now at Veteran’s Park. It is a well-known event organized by our local Rotary International Club.Several local civic organizations, along with local and state leaders, attended. Representatives of these organizations and local government were asked to place wreaths at the memorial. When the county Legislature representatives were asked twice to step forward, there was no response because they were not there. It was an embarrassing moment.last_img read more

Trump undercutting our American ideals

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, Opinion Mr. Trump has diminished our international credibility by withdrawing from the Paris Climate Accord and by failing to certify the Iran Nuclear Deal. Moreover, his actions have opened the door for our major adversaries, China and Russia, to fill the leadership void Trump has created. Mr. Trump has criticized our NATO allies while he has praised dictators such as Russian President Vladimir Putin and Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.  In doing so, he has shown a preference for totalitarian leadership over democratic leadership and thus exhibited a disdain for the very foundations of our country.Mr. Trump has acted contrary to American values by fanning the flames of prejudice, discrediting immigrants, and threatening incarceration without due process. He has tolerated the actions of Neo-Nazi and White Supremacist groups.Mr. Trump’s actions have confounded our allies and caused discord domestically. What more could Russia ask for?Don SteinerNiskayunaMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationNiskayuna girls’ cross country wins over BethlehemPuccioni’s two goals help Niskayuna boys’ soccer top Shaker, remain perfectEDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homes We may never know if Donald Trump directly colluded with Russia prior to the 2016 elections. However, it’s clear that the Trump presidency is advancing the international political goals of the Kremlin. For decades, Russia has been working to undermine the institutions and credibility of the West in general and the United States in particular. Until the 2016 presidential elections, the Russian efforts have yielded only limited success. However, now the Kremlin has found an ally in Donald Trump, whose rhetoric and behavior are yielding results which the Russian propaganda machine could not achieve alone.Mr. Trump has undermined our institutions by attacking our judicial system, vilifying  our media, questioning the findings of our intelligence agencies, and casting doubt on the validity of our election process. These accusations, remarkably promulgated by an American president, directly support the Kremlin’s propaganda goals.last_img read more

Letters to the Editor for Wednesday, Jan. 30

first_imgReserve education aid for our citizensIn response to Gov. Andrew Cuomo pushing this Dream Act through,  I would just like to say that I feel infuriated that my husband and I are taxpayers in the state of New York and our son received zero aid from this state when he attended college. We wanted our son to get a great education, which he did, and we paid for it out of our own pocket without help from anyone. Trump’s got nothing positive to brag aboutPresident Trump recently tweeted about all his accomplishments. I’d just like to add a few he left out.Trump has managed to lose 10 cabinet members and 65 of his executive staff and has helped the Republican Party lose 40 House seats. Grateful for highway crew work in GlenvilleJust a quick note from the Glenville area of the county of Schenectady. The town Highway Department and its staff have done an excellent job of snow removal and salting and sanding in these last couple of weeks of inclement weather. Let’s give them a big thanks.Robert NicolellaGlenville Now my husband, myself and my son can pay for the loans he needed to accomplish this for the next 10 years. Meanwhile, please let me pay for some immigrant in the country illegally, who has no business being in this state, so that he or she may receive some free education from our governor. If I were the governor, I would be sure to push the right to vote through for these same illegal immigrants so that there will be someone to vote for him in the future. I for one will be looking into packing my bags, and I will encourage my son to take his degree from Clarkson University and get the hell out of this state. Kathleen LamphereCanajoharie Categories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionDemocrats work hard for upstate NY, too According to Market Watch, he’s increased the U.S. trade deficit by billions, despite his campaign promise to “get rid” of it.  Not only has the economy not increased, but his economic policies since February 2018 have driven the Dow index down significantly. And, the national debt (what you and I owe other countries like China) is more than $2 billion higher since he’s been in office. But, on the positive side, he’s traveled for 44 campaign rallies and 67 visits to golf clubs, mostly ones he owns. Oh yeah, and he spent two minutes at the Martin Luther King, Jr. monument.Richard W. Lewis, Jr.Glenville How hard is that to understand? Just look north to the Mohawk Harbor property: not one slick sidewalk or blocked entrance anywhere at Rivers Casino and beyond on the ‘Harbor’ properties. Now, that’s snow removal.Gerald PlanteSchenectady Keep politics out of restaurant reviewsJust when I thought your anti-Trump rhetoric couldn’t get any worse, I read the dining review of El Charro Mexican Grill. The article twice took veiled digs at the president and his policies. Let’s keep the politics out of restaurant reviews. The Gazette already publishes enough negative things about our president. Edward PritchardSchenectady Electoral College failed America once againHey, have you got a minute? For the second time in as many decades, a constitutional appendix has foiled the will of the majority of the United States voters.Another election where the candidate who wins the popular vote doesn’t get the White House.Over the years, the Electoral College has been much derided, including by its most recent beneficiary: Donald Trump. The Electoral College is a disaster for a democracy. November 6, 2016. Think about it.Joe DruzbaSchenectadyMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Find a way to get family members into nursing homesEDITORIAL: Thruway tax unfair to working motoristsEDITORIAL: Beware of voter intimidationCuomo calls for clarity on administering vaccineFoss: Should main downtown branch of the Schenectady County Public Library reopen? I read The Daily Gazette’s Jan. 27 editorial advising the state Legislature to take their time considering bills, and I agree. But I disagree with the statement about halfway through the article that talks about how the Republican Party are really the ones who represent upstate, while Democrats care only about New York City. This is also a common refrain in the campaign materials of upstate Republicans. But it’s wrong. People who live here care about here. I’ve run in two local elections myself, and just a few months ago worked on a state Senate race. Not once did anyone in any party talk about subways, or Long Island traffic, or really much of any local issues past our homes. The big state and national issues like taxes and healthcare and schools are important to people, regardless of where they live. I know lots of great Democrats and lots of great Republicans in our community. They may have different ideas on how to handle issues, but we all care about the same things, and a Democrat will fight just as hard for their constituents as a Republican.Howard R. SchlossbergNiskayuna No parking charges until snow is removedLately, walking throughout downtown Schenectady is quite the icy-dicey trip. And what about all those meters you have to use to park? You can’t get to them climbing up a packed snowy incline. From Mayor Gary McCarthy down to the rip-off DSIC, which charges for such, we consumers ain’t gettin’ a bang for our tax buck. Until city employees and merchants, et. al., learn how to remove snow, don’t expect us shoppers to shop or pay for parking. You’re taking your life into your own hands. Remove the snow from entrances from the curb to the door. last_img read more

Indonesia welcomes 16.1m foreign tourists in 2019, coronavirus clouds tourism outlook

first_imgA total of 16.1 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia throughout 2019, falling short of the government’s target of attracting 20 million tourists, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) announced on Monday, warning that the coronavirus outbreak could cloud the outlook this year. The figure reflects a sluggish 1.88 percent growth in tourist arrivals from 2018, which recorded 15.81 million individuals entering the country, because of a significant surge in tourist arrivals in the summer season, which lasted between June and August, according to BPS data.“We still have work to attract more foreign tourists to come into Indonesia,” said BPS head Suhariyanto during a press conference in Jakarta. The agency recorded a contraction of 2.03 percent of foreign arrivals in December last year, which saw 1.37 million foreign tourists. Read also: Indonesia tourism, trade prone to Wuhan coronavirus impactAccording to BPS data, 9.8 million foreign tourists visited Indonesia by using airlines, followed by 4.1 million using sea transportation and 2.1 million using land transportation.Suhariyanto said that Ngurah Rai Airport in Bali and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta saw the most foreign arrivals in 2019, recording 6.23 million and 2.41 million, respectively.BPS data showed that in 2019, Bali recorded an increase in foreign arrivals of 3.55 percent compared to 2018, while Jakarta recorded a decrease of 14.05 percent compared to 2018. Meanwhile, Batam recorded 1.94 million of foreign arrivals through sea transportation in 2019, an increase of 3.21 percent. Suhariyanto said Malaysia sent the most tourists to Indonesia, followed by Singapore and China in 2019.“However, the coronavirus outbreak in China will no doubt lower foreign arrivals from China to Indonesia this year,” said Suhariyanto.Read also: Indonesia closes doors to travelers from ChinaAs of Monday, the coronavirus had killed 362, all but one in China, and had infected nearly 17,392 globally, surpassing infections caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the result of another strain of coronavirus that originated in China in 2003.The Indonesian government declared on Sunday that it would ban all travel to and from China to prevent the spread of the deadly and highly contagious coronavirus. The ban, which took effect at 12 a.m. on Monday, prevents visitors who have stayed in China for 14 days or more from visiting or transiting in Indonesia. The government will suspend visa-free and visa-on-arrival provisions for Chinese citizens.center_img Topics :last_img read more
